Women’s Health

Women’s bodies are powerful, and they go through a lot over the course of one’s lifetime. Not only do they have to endure the hormonal changes that come from the menstrual cycle and menopause, but if a woman goes through childbirth, then their bodies have to endure big changes that can continue to impact their day-to-day life after having a baby.

Women’s health issues are a pillar of physical therapy. There are a variety of issues that a woman can struggle with that can benefit from tailored treatment options. At Forever Fit, we can help a woman alleviate the symptoms of her health issues and work toward a healthier future.

Common Women’s Health Issues

While all women can experience health issues at any stage of their life, a majority of the issues can develop during pregnancy and after giving birth. Not only can these issues cause physical discomfort, they can also cause emotional and mental distress that deserve proper support.

Here are three of the most common women’s health issues:

Post-childbirth pain

Vaginal childbirth is one of the most painful experiences that a woman can endure, and the pain doesn’t stop after the baby is born, even if you have a cesarean section. Every woman recovers differently, but the pain after a vaginal childbirth can last several weeks. Having a tear or perineal tear can increase the time frame. The incision site of a C-section can cause lingering pain for three or more weeks.

Pelvic floor problems

Both pregnancy and childbirth can impact your pelvic floor, which is the group of muscles that support your bladder, bowels and reproductive system. A woman’s pelvic floor muscles can lose their strength because they support the weight of the baby as it grows and then they stretch during childbirth. A weak pelvic floor can cause issues like anal and urinary incontinence as well as pelvic organ prolapse.

Chronic pain

Pain that persists for at least three months is often labeled as chronic. While chronic pain can affect any gender, it affects a much larger proportion of the female population as opposed to the male. Studies show that about 70% of people who live with chronic pain in the U.S. are women. It’s believed that women are more likely to have persistent pain than men because they have more vertebral changes and compression fractures as they age.
